Ultrasonic testing

Ultrasonic testing is another form of non destructive testing where a transducer applies ultrasonic pulse waves in the frequency range of 0.5 to 10MHz in the material and the time of flight of the ultrasonic waves is measured from the initiation time to the return of the reflection to the transducer.

Any change in acoustic impedance produces ultrasonic reflection or echo.

This property of the ultrasound is used to identify the material wall thickness and any internal discontinuities in material.

Ultrasonic testing is very sensitive test method for detection of embedded linear discontinuities. Ultrasonic testing is faster and economical as compared to radiographic examination.

The common applications of ultrasonic testing are wall thickness measurement (UTT), corrosion mapping, lamination testing (ULT) , flaw (discontinuities) detection in the material e.g. welds, castings, forgings and other wrought products (UFD), density measurement of material, hardness measurement, etc.

Ultrasonic testing is commonly used test method in aerospace industry, shipping and offshore industry, fabrication industry and other general industry.

LMATS  Melboure and Sydney laboratories performs ultrasonic tests in accordance with AS 2207, AS 2083,  AS 2574, AS 1065, AS 2452.3, AS 2824, AS 1101.3, AS 1929, ASME V Article 4, ASME V Article 5, ASME V Article 23,  ASTM E164, ASTM E114, ASTM A609, ASTM A388, ASTM A745, AS 1554 series, AS 3978, AS 3992, AS 2885.2,  AS 1665, AS 1710, ASTM 2375, EN 1714, EN 12680-3, BS EN 10160, ISO 10543, ISO 11496, ISO 4386.1, CECT, API and other similar national and international standards.

Ultrasonic testing of Hollow axles

LMATS has developed a convenient manual bore ultrasonic testing tool for inspection of hollow axles at client facilities in Australia.

Implementation of fully automated systems for inspection of in-service hollow axles may not be economical in Australian rolling stock workshops due to the offered number of hollow axles per batch for testing.

Hence, LMATS has developed a bore testing Ultrasonic technique to scan from the internal surface of hollow axles to detect cracks on the outer surface. This method replaces conventional methods of dismantling axles and then performing ACFM or stripping paint off to perform Magnetic particle inspection.

Substantial cost savings is achieved for the asset owners by not dismantling hollow axles and LMATS performing manual Ultrasonic by accessing the bore. Unlike, fully automatic system, LMATS test system is completely portable without a need of a crane or hoist or trolleys to carry testing tools.

LMATS  offers Hollow axle testing regularly to its clients from their various locations in  VIC - Victoria (Melbourne & Dandenong), NSW - New South Wales (Albury, Sydney & Newcastle), Qld – Queensland (Brisbane) WA – Western Australia (Perth) and other states as required by our customers.
